Joseph Bianchi, MD, presented the Halifax Medical Center (HMC) Medical Staff report. In addition to approving the routine recommendations made on
behalf of the Medical Staff, the Board:
- Approved and welcomed Peter J. Linek, DDS, MD, to the HMC Medical Staff.
- Agreed to follow the recommendation of the Medical Staff and HCHS President/CEO Jeff Feasel to send a letter of support to the University of
Central Florida to express Halifax Medical Centers desire to support the idea in concept of possible future affiliation with its medical school.
Mr. Feasel brought the Board up to date on several events, projects and announcements including:
- In the HealthGrades 8th Annual Study released Oct. 17, Halifax Medical Center ranked:
- #1 in Florida and in the top 5% in the nation for overall orthopedic services
- #2 in Florida and in the top 5% in the nation in spinal surgery
- in the top 5% in the nation for stroke services
- in the top 10% in the nation for overall vascular services
- The Checkered Flag Committees 33rd Annual Daytona 500 NASCAR-LPGA Charity Golf Classic will be held Feb. 9-10 at LGPA International. Proceeds
will benefit the Betty Jane France Center of Excellence for Children and Women, LPGA Foundation and Checkered Flag Charities.
- The Family Medicine Residency Programs 2006-2007 resident recruitment search is underway.
- Work on the HMC window replacement project continues. To date, nine of the 14 bays on the east side of the tower, and 50 percent of the
Psychiatric Center, have been completed. The schedule is progressing well with most of the previous months weather delays having been made up.
- Renovations to the Regional Oncology Center (ROC) second floor are complete and medical oncology staff and physicians, along with all patient
care, will move back to the ROC on Mon., Nov. 21 from their temporary quarters at the HMC-Atlantic Campus.
- Florida Health Care Plans (FHCP) is offering very competitive and attractive health coverage plans, including the new Medicare Part D
prescription drug coverage. Specially trained FHCP staff is available to present educational information to the community, on the program.
- The Hospice of Volusia/Flagler:
- Will file an appeal to pursue a Certificate of Need (CON) for an inpatient care center in Southeast Volusia.
- Received final regulatory approval on the site, and their board approval for additional funds needed, to quickly move forward with building
the inpatient care center in Orange City. A capital campaign is currently underway to help underwrite the cost of the facility.
- Held the 4th Annual Hospice 5K Run & Walk on Nov. 5 to benefit their Family Caregiver Program. Over 450 participants raised $9,500.
Halifax Hospital-Port Orange and the Human Resources Dept. had the two largest teams represented in the event.
- The HCHS Technology Users Conference held Nov. 9-10 was attended by over 250 Team members and physicians.
- After being open one month, the new Halifax Express Care is already offering a speedier treatment alternative to patients with a low-acuity
injury or illness who come to the HMC Emergency Dept. with a current average turn around time of 66 minutes.
HCHS Chief Financial Officer Harry Reese presented the year end finance committee report noting financial indicators for fiscal year 2005, which
ended Sept. 30, were very good overall. Mr. Feasel joined the Board in congratulating all HCHS Team members for the outstanding operations, cost reductions and hard work this represents.
All items on the consent agenda were approved including the Family BirthPlace renovations and power supply equipment for the Data Center.
Under old business:
- Several Board members asked for a status update on the issue of moving all HCHS buildings, which are currently smoke free facilities, toward
becoming smoke free campuses. The Board requested an update from staff at the next meeting, as well as an update on the Drug-Free Workplace certification initiative.
- Due to scheduling conflicts, the regular December meeting of the HCHS Board of Commissioners was cancelled. The next regular meeting will be on
Jan. 4, 2006.
