Bereavement Services Meet Individual Needs

New Beginnings - is a support group that is offered four times a year and led by a master’s degree-level professional. Mutual support and friendship in small, informal groups allow members to regain a level of emotional health and begin to enjoy and participate in life's experiences.

Reflections - an informal social and informational group led by skilled volunteers addresses practical issues such as nutrition and budgeting. Participants obtain information about community activities and services, and to socialize with others who are experiencing similar circumstances.

Camp BeginAgain - offers a weekend retreat for young people age 6 to 18 who have recently lost a loved one. The camp combines recreational and sharing activities while creating special bonds among campers who are experiencing similar emotions. Campers share in grief support groups to learn how others cope with emotions and to discover ways to remember their loved ones.

The Lawrence E. Whelan BeginAgain Children's Grief Center d in Daytona Beach in 1998 as a direct outgrowth of the Camp BeginAgain experience to provide year-round counseling and support for children and their families. Modeled after the Dougy Center in Portland, Oregon, the Hospice-related program has gained national recognition of its own, for its successful outreach efforts.

Drawing mainly on public support for their funding, the Grief Centers benefit from the skills and dedication of a corps of more than two dozen specially-trained volunteers and the backing of several civic organizations. Activities at the Centers are geared to each youngster's individual needs. Drawings, acting out emotions, group discussions and ceremonies, such as sending hand-made boats off on a lake at sunset with candles burning on each to symbolize ‘letting go’ are all a part of the therapy.

Individual and Family Counseling - gives individual support to anyone wanting one-on-one counseling. Bereavement counselors work privately with families and individuals who are having difficulty dealing with their loss.

Bereavement Volunteers - are specially trained and work with the Hospice of Volusia/Flagler chaplains and counselors to provide emotional comfort.
Memorial Services - are held to honor and remember patients who have died in recent months. Family and friends of those being honored, along with staff and volunteers, are invited to attend and share their experiences and memories. The services are non-sectarian in nature.
