Childbirth Education Classes
Halifax Medical Center offers several classes to help mothers-to-be prepare for the birth of their babies.
Prepared Childbirth Class (Lamaze)
Prepared Childbirth Class helps a mother-to-be, and her support person, prepare physically and emotionally for the birth of the baby. Topics include anatomy and physiology, the stages of labor, a
discussion of medications available to relieve discomfort, and relaxation and breathing techniques. A tour of the Family BirthPlace is included. Taught by Lamaze Certified Childbirth Instructor Jan Wagner, RN, the
class helps new parents be informed so they can look forward with joy to the celebration of birth. Wagner, who has over 22 years of childbirth education teaching experience, offers parents several convenient
sessions to choose from including a five-week evening class or a one day weekend class. For parents who have been through a Childbirth Preparation Class in the past, Wagner offers the Refresher Childbirth Class, a
three-hour evening class. It is recommended that mom attend the class of her choice, with a support person, six to eight weeks before her baby is due.
Breastfeeding Class
Breastfeeding Class is taught by International Board Certified Lactation Consultant Marysia Hall, RN. This four-hour class is offered to those who have chosen or who are considering breastfeeding their
baby. Class discussions include: benefits of breastfeeding, first feeding, positions, common concerns, returning to work, milk storage and social/psychological factors associated with
breastfeeding. Fathers are encouraged to attend. The class is offered every other month.
Hall also visits with mothers while they are in the hospital, and is available for phone consults or outpatient consults by appointment.
Classes are held on the main campus of Halifax Medical Center in
Daytona Beach. For information on these and other parent education programs, or to register for a class, call Halifax Medical Center Parent Education at 386-254-4008.
