The medical and surgical leader. Halifax Medical Center (HMC) received the HealthGrades 2005 Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence Award, ranking it in the top 5% of all hospitals in the nation for clinical outcomes. HMC is also ranked:
• #1 in Florida and in the top 5% in the nation for overall orthopedic services
• #2 in Florida and in the top 5% in the nation in spinal surgery
• In the top 5% in the nation for stroke services
• In the top 10% in the nation for overall vascular services.

Recognized as most preferred hospital. The National Research Corp. has named HMC as Volusia and Flagler counties ‘most preferred’ hospital presenting us with their Consumer’s Choice Award every year since 1996.
Only at Halifax. Halifax Medical Center, with 500 physicians on its medical staff, is the only tertiary care hospital in East Central Florida. HMC has the only Trauma Center, Neonatal Intensive Care, Pediatric Intensive Care, Multiple Sclerosis Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center in the area.
Caring for thousands, one patient at a time. In Fiscal Year 2005, Halifax Medical Center:
• Provided care to 19,015 patients in their community clinics
• Treated 134,726 patients in the Emergency Department and Urgent Care Centers
• Cared for 2,366 trauma patients
• Admitted 29,207 patients
• Performed 15,818 surgical procedures
Most modern Heart Center. The Halifax Heart Center, where highly trained, experienced physicians and staff performed 2,928 procedures last year, offers the latest technology in digital imaging in 4 brand new cardiac catheterization labs and 3heart operating suites.
National resources, close to home. Through its national affiliations with organizations such as the National Cancer Institute, American College of Surgeons and others, the Kerman Regional Oncology Centers provide care, including clinical trials, to cancer patients in our community that rivals the largest, university-based centers. Specialists in medical, radiation and gynecological oncology and hematology care for patients through our centers in Daytona Beach, Ormond Beach, Port Orange and New Smyrna Beach.
Leading advances. Stereotactic Radiosurgery, the most precise, non-invasive method of reaching tumors and other problem areas deep within the brain, was first introduced to the Central Florida region at the Regional Oncology Center.
Less invasive procedures. Interventional radiology at Halifax combines the availability of state-of-the-art technology with highly trained physicians who can accomplish procedures with tiny catheters capable of repairing abdomen and brain aneurysms, killing uterine fibroids, dissolving blood clots, removing kidney stones, injecting chemotherapy drugs directly into tumors and repairing arteries and veins using balloons and stents.
Affordable health. Florida Health Care Plans and Volusia Health Network provide affordable, comprehensive health insurance services to more than 95,000 people - nearly one out of every five residents - in Volusia County.
Care and compassion for the terminally ill. The Hospice of Volusia/Flagler (HOVF) offers the most comprehensive hospice program in the region, caring for over 3,200 patients in 2005 - in their homes, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, or wherever they reside. HOVF is also able to offer a wide-range of services including complementary therapies, trauma and loss program, caregiver support and respite care, grief counseling for children, adults and families and more.
More Hospice facilities. Expanding its services for those who need a higher level of care or cannot remain in their home, The Hospice of Volusia/Flagler now offers the Hospice Care Center in Port Orange and Hospice Houses in New Smyrna Beach and Palm Coast. When the new Hospice Care Center in Orange City is complete, it will offer patients in West Volusia a much needed expansion of end of life services.
Involved in the community. Our Team Members are strong supporters of health and community-related charitable organizations - as community leaders, volunteers and with dollars. Since 1996, the HCHS Employee Community Service Fund has contributed over $668,000 to local charities.
Dedicated volunteers. There are over 900 active volunteers serving patients and their families through the Halifax Medical Center Auxiliary, Hospice of Volusia/Flagler and Florida Health Care Plans. Last year these volunteers gave 145,892 hours of service.
Bringing health and safety home. Healthy Communities is the coordinating link to provide education, health resources and enhanced access to health care in our community, and serves as the local administrator for Florida KidCare. This includes the nationally acclaimed Healthy Kids program which began in Volusia County.
Keeping children safe. Since 1996, the SAFE KIDS Coalition, of which Healthy Communities is a partner, has provided eligible children with 7,600 water safety instruction scholarships and 16,000 free bicycle helmets. Certified technicians hold child car seat safety checks throughout the area using a Mobile Child Passenger Van provided by GM/Cheverolet and SAFE KIDS.
Your tax dollars at work. Your tax dollars insure that in Volusia County essential services such as the Trauma Center, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, child and adolescent behavioral services, and preventative health services such as community clinics and Healthy Kids, are available. In Fiscal Year 2006, Halifax Medical Center expects to provide $15.1 million more in uncompensated hospital-provided care, at cost, than it will receive from property taxes.
A teaching hospital. Halifax Medical Center is a teaching hospital, with more than 70 graduates of its Family Medicine Residency Program now in practice in Volusia and Flagler counties.
Educational partner. Since 1965, HMC has had a sponsored hospital-based program in Radiography, which is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology and is affiliated with Daytona Beach Community College. HCHS also partners with area colleges to provide clinical training programs at all levels of nursing, as well as respiratory, occupational and recreational therapists, social workers, and emergency medicine technicians, and non-clinical and management programs.
Happy Birthday! More babies have been born at the Family BirthPlace at Halifax Medical Center than any other hospital in Volusia County. Together the Family BirthPlace stqaff and the area’s most experienced physicians deliver over 1,700 babies each year. The100,000th baby to be born at HMC arrived in November 2002.
Mental health among our youth. Each year, Halifax Behavioral Services receives more than 5,000 referrals of young people in need of mental health screening, counseling or treatment.
On the horizon. When Halifax Hospital-Port Orange in the fall of 2006, this community hospital will include 80 patient beds, a 24-hour Emergency Department and an Intensive Care Unit.
